Our Story

IX STYLE: Our Story

Our Water Mission:

Our Impact:

Welcome Everyone!

I’m Francesca Kennedy, the founder of Ix Style. We are a socially conscious fashion company that donates 15% of our profits to provide clean drinking water to children in Guatemala where my family is originally from!

Ix is the Mayan word for water, one of the most essential, magical, and transformative substances in the world. Water fuels everything that we do!

Here are 7 things to know about us:

1

We do it because it’s in our blood

Did you know that your blood is 92% water?

Many have called Guatemala’s Lake Atitlan the eighth wonder of the world. Great artists and intellectuals from Simone de Beauvoir to Ingrid Bergman to Pablo Neruda all lived and created by the shores of the pristine lake. For my family, the lake holds special significance. It is where my grandfather, Colonel Arthur Kennedy II, lived for many years. It’s where my family celebrated countless birthdays and holidays. It’s where some of our happiest memories were made.

2

We provide for the next generation

When I returned to the lake in 2010, the lake had become completely overrun with blue green algae. The water looked like sewage. NASA called it one of the worst natural disasters of our lifetime, because you could see the pollution from space.  I will never forget the image of young girls collecting the contaminated water to drink, to cook, to clean. Until that point, I had always taken clean drinking water for granted. It was then I learned that diseases from unsafe water kill more people each year than any form of violence, including war. That 2 out of 3 children in Guatemala will go to bed hungry each night. That many Guatemalan children are unable to attend school because they must walk miles each day in order to collect drinking water for their families. It had been my dream since childhood to do something to give back to Guatemala. I knew that I had to act.

WE Make Things

Shoes, Mostly. Change, Definitely.

WE give back

We donate 15% of our profits from every single purchase made to Asociacion Puente, which is Spanish for “Bridge Association”. Asociacion Puente, founded by the former First Lady of Guatemala, Wendy Berger, works throughout Guatemala to reduce extreme poverty and malnutrition.

Their primary mission is to educate and inspire indigenous women, members of one of the most marginalized populations in the world. The women are enrolled in 18 months of weekly classes, where they are taught everything from nutrition to hygiene to childcare. They receive personal one-on-one counseling to suit their specific needs, and they are encouraged to start a business of their choice through entrepreneurial training and financial assistance. Upon graduation, they are gifted with a water filtration and rain collection system, and encouraged to impart the knowledge they have gained onto their family and friends. In doing so, Asociacion Puente hopes to continue the cycle of female empowerment and economical growth, employing each woman as a catalyst for greater change.

5

We empower women

From our artisans to the indigenous women of Asociacion Puente, our mission is to empower women through education, commerce, and production. We choose to invest in women, because we know that investing in women is the most effective way to invest in a community. According to the WHO, women invest 90% of earned income into their communities and families, compare with 30% for men. These women spend their money on nutrition, medicine, and housing – using the knowledge and money they have earned to give their children a better life. With safe and convenient access to water, children no longer have to walk hours each day to retrieve water for their families, and can return to school instead. Education and commerce are the most effective ways to break the cycle of poverty. By investing in women, we hope to invest in a new generation and a bright future for Guatemala.

6

We have green thumbs

Through our donations to AIR Guatemala, one tree is planted in Guatemala for each pair of shoes purchased. Since 1993, AIR has planted nearly 4 million trees in severely deforested areas of Guatemala, helping to improve soil quality and prevent soil erosion and mudslides. This saves countless lives. By donating to AIR Guatemala, we hope to offset our carbon footprint, leaving the world a little better than the way we found it.

7

WE Dream Big

Already, we have achieved so many of our initial dreams. Thanks to water’s amazing capacity to cleanse itself, the lake has been cleaned in recent years and restored to its former beauty. Countless women and children have been empowered, and a nursery has been built in Guatemala in our name. But we are not even close to being finished.

We are constantly expanding, seeking new opportunities to grow, to take our water mission to the next level, and to continue empowering people around the world. We truly believe that the grass is greener where you water it. Water has the potential to transform communities and shape lives, there’s a reason some refer to it as “liquid gold”. We’re going to continue sprinkling a little magic wherever we go, and we hope that you do the same.

Why Women?

Typically, women are the ones who run a household, care for children, and provide them with food and drinking water.
According to the WHO, women invest 90% of earned income into their communities and families, compared with 30% for men.

Women spend this money on nutrition, medicine and housing; consequently their children are healthier.Investing in women is a great way to invest in communities.
